Accompanied by Paul Hamburger (Piano)

Heather Harper originally trained as a concert pianist and studied singing as a second subject. It was the award of a singing scholarship that decided the course of her career and she has since become one of the world's leading sopranos with s wide repertoire and versatility which enables her to excel in any style from early church music to the new idioms of contemporary composers - several of whom have dedicated works to her.

She is in great demand internationally on the concert platform, in opera and in the recording studios of all major recording companies and has received an Edison Award for her recording of Britten's 'Les Illuminations'. She has broadcast frequently on radio and television throughout the world.

In 1965 Heather Harper was created a Commander of the British Empire; is an Honarary Member of the Royal Academy of Music; an Hon. D. Mus. of Belfast University and Fellow of Trinity College of Music, London.

Paul Hamb urger was born in Vienna in 1920 and studied at the Vienna State Academy. He came to England in 1939 and studied the piano with Frank Merrick at the Royal College of Musicv on a British Council Scholarship. After the war he played extensively for the Arts Council and began to broadcast. He also toured in many countries as a chanber-music player and accompanist.

From 1956 to 1962 Paul Hamburger was a coach for the Glyndebourne Opera Company and in 1962 he joined the BBC as a part time staff accompanist; this allowed him to retain his freelance activities. Throughout his distinguished career he has accompanied many famous singers.

He contributes regularly to musical journals and has written several books on music. He has also given broadcast talks on music, especially in the 'Interpretations on Record' series on Radio 3.
