Recovered and restored - a classic Patrick Troughton.

Yes. You read correctly. The Enemy Of The World! On DVD! Amazing.

It's a story we fans never expected to see again, but thanks to the meticulous efforts of missing episode hunter Phil Morris, we have a 'brand new', complete Second Doctor story to enjoy for the first time in 45 years. What's most exciting about this recovery is the chance to discover a gem from Doctor Who's distant past; overlooked for so long, now ripe for reappraisal. And what a gem it is.

David Whitaker's high-concept, James-Bond-esque-thriller offers relief from the 'base-under-siege' plots typical of this era, and is the only story of the fifth season not to feature a monster as the main adversary. It's a refreshing change, and one that makes the threat of Salamander all the more dangerous. Future Producer Barry Letts makes his directoral debut here; his work is taught, pacy and bold - the Episode 1 film sequences in particular demonstrating a vision and ambition seldom seen in the programme before. His reputation as an 'actor's director' also shines thriugh, but it is of course Patrick Troughton who steals every scene he is in.

The return of precious vintage episodes is a real treat for fans, and The Enemy Of The World is a previously underrated story that not only delivers, but surpasses expectations. And as for missing episode hunter Phil Morris, as Astrid says in episode 1; "you're the most wonderful and marvellous man that's ever dropped out of the skies."

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
