board their ship? And why is the Doctor's old enemy the Master involved?

Background

The Claws of Axos is found in the middle of Jon Pertwee's second series as the Third Doctor. Typical of this Earth-based era of Doctor Who, the planet is once again invaded by aliens and it's up to the Doctor, Jo Grant and the rest of the UNIT 'family' to stop them. Also, as well as being troubled by the Axon threat, the Doctor has to contend with his new best enemy, the Master, who turns up in every story that year.

The script is the first of many contributions to Doctor Who by writers Bob Baker and Dave Martin. Their original storyline, called The Gift, was written for Patrick Troughton's Doctor. It involved an alien invasion in London's Hyde Park, a giant skull for a spaceship, Battersea Power Station, and a cliffhanger featuring a giant carrot.

While the production team liked many of the basic ideas, it was apparent that the story would go way over budget. A new scaled-back script (and unfortunately minus the carrot) eventually became The Claws of Axos. Now set outside London, location filming took place against the eerie beauty of Dungeness in Kent where unusual weather conditions required new dialogue to be included in the script.

The Axons are a memorable and iconic Doctor Who monster but would never return to fight the Doctor again. However, a resprayed and modified axon monster suit would appear a few years later - when it became the Krynoid for The Seeds of Doom.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
