Synopsis

Little Hodcombe, 1984. The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough arrive in a small English village, looking forward to spending some time with Tegan's grandfather. They soon discover that all is not well - Tegan's grandfather is missing and the locals are re-enacting dangerous war games from 1643.

With the past mixed up with the present, can the Doctor stop the games before an evil entity hidden in the village church awakens?

Background

Writer Eric Pringle was commissioned to write a story for the 13th season of Doctor Who by Robert Holmes but this story was never completed. In 1982, script editor Eric Saward got Pringle to produce a breakdown for his War Game script, and this eventually became a two-part story called The Awakening.

Doctor Who stories placed in a rural setting always look good. Against the backdrop of Little Hodcombe, a fictional place filmed in three different locations - one village in Hampshire and two in Dorset - The Awakening has the claustrophobic feeling of a John Wyndham novel as well as echoing many Earth-based stories from the Jon Pertwee era, in particular The Daemons (1971).

Although difficult to imagine him in the stories that follow, at one point the Will Chandler character from The Awakening was considered as regular companion alongside Tegan, Turlough and (the almost forgotten) Kamelion, but this idea was ultimately abandoned. The underused shape-changing Kamelion, last seen in his debut story the previous year, was set to appear in this story but was cut from an overrunning Part One.

The Awakening also sees Barry Newbery's final contribution as designer for Doctor Who. Newbery has worked on the very first story in 1963, and his church and crumbling crypt sets are incredibly effective.

Fast-paced and beautifully shot, The Awakening is a fine addition to Peter Davison's last season as the Fifth Doctor.

Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.

The items shown here are from the "main" BBC Records and Tapes library covering a wide secletion of genres from themes, comedy dramas and others, depending on which format you have selected.
