Synopsis

Professor Keller has created a machine that can pacify even the most dangerous of criminmals. But when the Doctor and Jo arrive at Stangmoor Prison for a demonstration, things start to go horribly wrong - especially when they discover that the Doctor's old enemy the Master is responsible for the machine. What could he possibly want from the criminals? And what connects him with an impending World Peace Conference?

Background

The Mind of Evil is the second story of Jon Pertwee's second season as the Earth-bound Doctor. Typical of that year, we see the Doctor and his new assistant Jo Grant working alongside UNIT to investigate anything alien or suspicious. And like other stories that year, lurking somewhere nearby is Roger Delgado's magnificent Master, ready to create trouble in style.

After his first appearance in the previous story, The Mind of Evil establishes how busy the Master has been and how time has moved on between stories. There's mention of nearly a year passing since the Master evaded capture by UNIT - since then he's created a dangerous machine and established himself with an alias of Professor Emil Keller.

A machine that can rewire the minds of criminals is similar to themes found in Anthony Burgess' novel A Clockwork Orange, and writer Don Houghton added a peace conference and a nuclear warhead into the mix to create a gritty and powerful Doctor Who story.

Although traumatic for the Doctor, there's a treat for fans as the Master's machine menaces him at the end of the Episode Three with old favourites flashing before him as we hear the menacing war cry of the Daleks ...

Existing only in the BBC archives in the form of monochrome 16mm prints, The Mind of Evil has been restored completely to colour for the first time in over forty years. Episode One has been coloured by hand, with the remaining five restored using the Colour Recovery process to extract colour information.
