Synopsis

The Doctor and Peri arrive on the planet Necros, home of Tranquil Repose, a funeral home for the galaxy's elite. But is this the Doctor's own final resting place? And why do Daleks guard the inner sanctums of the perpetually interred? Perhaps the Great Healer will have the answers ...

Background

By his own admission, Eric Saward felt that he handled the Daleks badly in his script for Resurrection of the Daleks (1984), and so wanted another chance to try and redeem both himself and Skaro's finest. Drawing inspiration from the bleak subject matter of Evelyn Waugh's darkly comic novel The Loved One, Saward injects the story with real menace and horror, whilst at the same time having immense fun with the slick and witty dialogue.

At the time of Revelation of the Daleks' transmission, Doctor Who had just been consigned to an 18-month hiatus by nervy BBC bosses, who criticised the series for being too violent and horrific, whilst also being staid and stagnant. How ironic that Revelation of the Daleks is perhaps one of the most imaginative and innovative stories that the series ever presented.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.

The items shown here are from the "main" BBC Records and Tapes library covering a wide secletion of genres from themes, comedy dramas and others, depending on which format you have selected.
