Synopsis

A mysterious light in the sky, an unnatural glow in the ocean and a thick fog bring terror to the lighthouse keepers of Fang Rock. When the Doctor and Leela arrive, the first death has already cast doubt on the safety of the lighthouse. But the Doctor discovers something more terrifying and evil than even he could have imagined.

Background

A classic adventure if ever there was one, Horror at Fang Rock was the first Doctor Who story transmitted under the tenure of producer Graham Williams. Given the difficult task of toning down what were described to him as 'sadistic' and 'violent' elements and themes, which had garnered criticism over the previous three years, Williams produced one of the most chilling Doctor Who stories ever made. This story was made almost entirely at the BBC's Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham, and was extremely complex to achieve both in design and technical terms. Director Paddy Russell chose an excellent cast to bring the script to life and her technical team demonstrated their expertise and attention to detail, ensuring that Horror of Fang Rock remains among the most highly-acclaimed Doctor Who stories of them all.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
