From the depths of the pop music jingle there came a cry in 1976 that said 'The Big Bands are back!' Well of course, they're never been away ... since the first exciting days of Tommy Dorsey or Artie Shaw or Ted Heath or Benny Goodman, the music that such men made has been, and is being, played all the time all over the world, but it is also probably fair to say that of the many big band sounds that have made musical history, the greatest impact of all came from a slim bespectacled trombone player whose name was Glen Miller. It is therefore good indeed that a fine musician like Syd Lawerence should form an orchestra in this country to perpetuate and reproduce so expertly the music that Glen Miller left behind him, and on this album Syd's orchestra shows not only it's very high standard of musicianship, but also a real understanding and love for this special idiom. Listen to the swing of 'American Patrol' or the classic 'St. Louis Blues March'. Hear the faithful reproduction of the evergreen 'Kalamazoo' or 'Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree' by Syd's vocal group, the Serenaders. Catch the unique vocal styles of Sheila Buxton, Roy Marsden and Kevin Kent, and you will realize that here is an album you must not miss. THE SYD LAWRENCE ORCHESTRA (Johnnie Stewart) | ||

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
