Reviews

Below is my review for this release and the ratings.
Another quite sad opening number though quite spooky when you listen to the female singer!

Starring

Ian Holm, "We the accused" by Ernest Raymond is both a love story and a sympathetic study of a murder.

Set in Islington in 1932, the story moves to Sussex and culminates in an exciting police hunt set against the dramatic background of the Lake District.

Also starring Angela Down, Elizabeth Spriggs and Iain Cuthbertson.

The book has been dramatised by Julia Jones, directed by Richard Stroud ans produced by Jonathon Powell in the BBC Classic Serial strand which also brought you "Crime and punishment", "Tinker, taylor, soldier, spy", "Testiment of youth", "Therese Raquin", and "Pride and prejudice".

The haunting sound of this theme is achieved by carefully mixing the sound of a wordless female voice with an Ondes Martenot, a very rare early synthesizer invented in the 1920's in France. The sinister noise in the accompaniment is made by a Cimbalom, a gypsy instrument from Eastern Europe. To heighten the ominous effect, viols are used instead os violins, violas and cellos.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.

The items shown here are from the "main" BBC Records and Tapes library covering a wide secletion of genres from themes, comedy dramas and others, depending on which format you have selected.
