Compiled by David Rider from the BBC archives. Interviews with London bus drivers.

Side A

focuses on horse driven buses, some drivers recounting stories from careers beginning in 1898. Recordings from 1946 - 1970.

Side B

concentrates on engine buses and includes interview archive from 1959 to 1970. Stories describe buses used to ferry troops during 1916 in WW1 France, fat ladies becoming stuck and how slippery the wooden roads of Victorian London became in rainy weather. Includes engine recordings from BBC Sound Effects Library.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
