Ken Freeman, inventor, recording engineer and producer began his professional music career at the age of sixteen, and by January 1966 his band Second City Sound was enjoying first chart success with Tchaikovshy one.

By the time of his departure from the band in 1969 he had learned enough about electronics to develop his own music synthesizer, long before the arrival of the modern day commercial equivalent. It was with this unique knowledge of music synthesis that eventually led him into a creative partnership with producer Jeff Wayne.

His first musical encounter with the three legged monsters came in 1976, when he worked on Wayne's much acclaimed double album version of H.G. Wells The War Of The Worlds. After completion of this two year project, Ken then went on to write music for television commercials, a venture that was to earn him yet further recognician. By 1981 he had chalked up a Clio award for his direction on a Gordon's Gin promo.

Impressed by his music for a BMW commercial, producer Richard Bates commissioned Ken to write the soundtrack for the BBC's new sci-fi extravaganza The Tripods. This was performed admirably, creating a dark and eerie atmosphere for the show whilst capturing the grandeur of the metal giants. This twenty five part epic tale fell one third short of its planned run, but Ken's superb talents did not go unnoticed and in 1986 he was asked to write the music for the BBC's hospital drama Casualty. Within a year he was working with fellow musician George Fenton on the soundtrack for the film Cry Freedom, then on his own again creating music for the television documentaries Daleys Decathlon and A Race Apart.

In recent years Ken's inventive skills and energy have been channelled into his home based business, where he is presently writing and marketing computer software. Both with his inventive musical and technical achievements, Ken Freeman's reputation is built on the solid foundation that he is one of the few true pioneers in the world of electronic music and production.

Further information

The items shown here are quite similar to the "main" BBC Records and Tapes library covering a wide secletion of genres from themes, comedy dramas and others, depending on which format you have selected. The main difference is the record was not released by the BBC directly - this could be because the rights were negotiated with another label or some other reason.
