The Giotto mission is the European Space Agency multi country team effort, prime contractor British Aerospace. It was launched successfully on July 2 1985 and will intercept Halley's Comet in March 1986.
The countries involved are:-
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Eire, France. Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdon.
The name Giotto is derived from the Florentine artist who saw the Comet in 1301 and painted it in his scene of the Nativity in Padua two years later. |
