Synopsis

The doctor, Romana and K9 receive a message from an old friend - a retired Time Lord living as a college Professor in Cambridge. He's misplaced an ancient Gallifreyan artefact that could unlock the dark secrets of Shada - the lost prison planet of the Time Lords - and unless they find it before the crazed scientist Skagra, every sentient being in the universe is doomed ...

This special DVD release features the legendary unfinished Fourth Doctor story, newly restored from original film negatives and studio recordings, with 1992 linking material from Tom Baker.

Background

Cambridge, 1979. An invisible spaceship. A mind-eating sphere. A crazed scientist. A retired Time Lord. A lost Gallifreyan artefact. An ancient prison planet. A race across the universe ...

With the possible exception of Terrance Dicks, that list would give any writer a nervous breakdown. But so worked the mind of Douglas Adams, Doctor Who script editor, best-selling author and all-round genius. His barmy, no-holds-barred six-parter would have brought the seventeenth season of Doctor Who to a mad, epic conclusion.

But it was not to be. Strike action halted production of Shada and it was abandoned after the completion of location filing and one studio session. Fortunately, however, all the raw material was retained - meaning that, over thirty years later, we can enjoy a tantalising glimpse at what could have been.

There are many highlights in the existing footage; Tom Baker and Lalla Ward at the height of their Doctor/companion relationship, gorgeous location filming (beautifully restored for this DVD), a star turn from Denis Carey as loveable Professor Chronotis, terrific supporting duo Danial Hill and Victoria Burgoyne as Chris and Claire, and a delicious villain in Christopher Neame's Skagra - all revelling in Douglas Adams wonderfully energetic and witty script.

In 1980, incoming producer John Nathan-Turner considered the possibility of shooting additional material and screening a truncated Shada as Doctor Who's first Christmas Special.

It would have been perfect.
