Synopsis

The TARDIS, along with the Doctor, Leela and K-9, arrives on Pluto in the distant future. The time travellers discover the planet has a breathable atmosphere and enjoys heat from six small suns, but the humans who live there are taxed and exploited heavily for the privilege. When Leela is captured and sentenced to death, the Doctor must save his companion, as well as stopping the ruthless Company, before it is too late ...

Background

The Sun Makers was written by Robert Holmes as he was getting ready to leave his position of script editor during Season 15 of Doctor Who. Renowned for dark stories with nightmare creatures and strong characters (the writer was also responsible for creating the recurring Autons and Sontarans), Holmes' satirical script is not as monster-led as previous work, but this time reflects his huge frustration with the Inland Revenue.

While the new robot dog K-9 was quickly written into The Sun Makers after it was decided he should join the TARDIS in The Invisible Enemy, at one point the Doctor Who production team considered killing off the Doctor's human companion Leela in this story. This idea was abandoned - with Leela's less grisly fate left for The Invasion of Time a couple of adventures later, when she was married off to a Gallifreyan guard.

Finding a rooftop with an empty skyline for the Megropolis One proved difficult until a tobacco company building in Bristol was discovered. Unfortunately, production was let down by weather, with the empty skyline shrouded in mist throughout.

Although some of the more political elements were toned down by request of producer Graham Williams, the resulting story about an alien race that taxes people beyond belief is littered with many subtle references to the tax man. Viewers cannot fail to miss the corridor named P45 and guards called the Inner Retinue. Just don't mention the stolen consumcard to a well-known Visa card company ...
