Synopsis

Transmitting down from Nerva Beacon, the Doctor, Sarah and Harry find themselves on Earth in the far future, long-since abandoned by the human race. But it soon becomes clear that they are not alone: a shipwrecked crew of Galsec colonists are being hunted down, one by one. What is the creature that lives in the rocks, and what is the purpose of the lethal tests it is conducting? Can the Doctor ensure the safety of the Earth for the future generations of Mankind?

Background

In early 1974, incoming producer Philip Hincliffe discovered he had inherited two six part stories as part of Season 12. One of these was Genesis of the Daleks, which was to become one of the best-loved adventures of all time. It soon became clear that the other was not going to be workable, and Hincliffe took the radical decision to instead produce a four-part story and a two-part story - the latter being a format not seen on Doctor Who since The Rescue in 1965. Logistic and budget constraints dictated that the shorter story - The Sontaran Experiment - would not feature any studio sequences.

The result is a story that remains unique in Doctor Who history to date, being shot entirely on location. The bleak Dartmoor landscape and overcast skies provide a dark, atmospheric backdrop for Styre's cruel experiments.

Tom Baker's fledgling Fourth Doctor makes a strong showing, although his performance was hampered by an accident during the shoot in which he broke his collarbone. This meant Terry Walsh stepped in as his double for many of the action sequences.

Far removed from the comfort of the UNIT 'family', the unflinchingly vivid presentation of alien tests on humans in The Sontaran Experiment exemplifies a dramatic template that would become commonplace during Philip Hincliffe's era of gothic horror.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
