Background

In 1980, Eric Saward submitted a story idea to the Doctor Who production office iidea centred around the Great Plague. When the resulting scripts impressed producer John Nathan-Turner, he was not only rewarded with a slot in the Season 19 but was also invited to become the series' scriptr editor.

The controversial team of Saward and Nathan-Turner would go on to define 1980's Doctpor Who, and their partnership begins here - with a story strangely atypical of the rest of their time on the series. Harking back in style to previous eras of the programme, The Visitation is a classic mix of adventure, humour and jeopardy which reinstates historical England as a regular setting for the Doctor's adventures after a four-year absence.

It's Peter Davison's second recorded story and he's already found the Fifth Doctor - his confidence visibly ramping up a notch between location and studio material. Davidson's Doctor is fresh, engagfing and energetic, always centre of our attention despite competing for screentime with three companions.

Guest actor Michael Robbins relishes his role as fruity Richard Mace, while Michael Melia acts his blackened socks off behind three inches of rubber as the Terilepil leader. Lush location filming (beautifully restored for this Special Edition), groundbreaking creature design and impressive matte shots add to the story's gloss.

The Visitation is often overshadowed by two other stories from that year - the bold, imaginative Kinda and the fan-pleasing Earthshock, but for those of us who grew up with Peter Davison's Doctor, the Visitation is vintage chocolaste-box Doctor Who. Best enjoyed in the dark ...
