Reviews

Below is my review for this release and the ratings.
This story introduces Leela, a good companion! But story seems rather slow ... Intesting that we have a savage empire relying on a futuristic area.

Synopsis

When the TARDIS arrives on a jungle planet, the Doctor encounters two warring tribes, the Sevateem and the Tesh. The Sevateem worship a god called Xoanon and the Tesh are supposedly keeping Xoanon prisoner ... But why do the Sevateem call the Doctor the Evil One? And what are the invisible creatures in the jungle? The Time Lord, with the help of a girl called Leela, is about to find out.

Background

When the popular long-term companion Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen, left the TARDIS, the production team were in no rush to replace her with a new regular companion. Script editor Robert Holmes suggested the new companion should be an Eliza Doolittle-type that the Doctor could educate, but her introductory story set in Victorian London was planned for the end of that year's series.

The Doctor needs someone to play against throughout an adventure, therefore when Chris Boucher was writing the script for The Face of Evil, he was asked to include a character thst would serve as a companion across that one four-episode story. At first, he gace this role to one of the male Sevateem warriors, but it was the character of Leela that producer Philip Hinchcliffe liked the most. It was quickly decided that her character should stay until at least the end of that year's run of episodes - and Leela became a primitive Eliza Doolittle with a dangerous streak.

Violent, aggressive, instinctive and good with a knife and crossbow, the innocent and child-like Leela is probably one of the most radical and successful departures for a Doctor Who companion. At the time, however, the character and costume [what there is of it] came under much fire from campaigner Mary Whitehouse and, in the beginning, lead actor Tom Baker did not care much for the character either.

Although criticised, Leela's knife and Janis thorns would prove useful in later episodes against deadly robots on a sandminer and the terror awaiting her in Victorian London, and actress Louise Jameson definitely makes an impressive debut as the Doctor's new savage companion.
