StarringSylvester McCoy (Seventh Doctor) Bonnie Langford (Mel Bush) Kate O'Mara The Rani Mark Greenstreet Ikona Donald Pickering Beyus Wanda Ventham Faroon Karen Clegg Sarn Richard Gauntlett Urak John Segal Lanisha Peter Tuddenham, Jacki Webb Special Voices Written byPip and Jane Baker Produced byJohn Nathan-Turner Directed byAndrew Morgan SynopsisViolently wrenched out of time, the TARDIS is brought crashing down onto the planet Lakertya by the villainous Rani. Caught within the maelstrom, the Doctor is forced to regenerate ... Imprisoning the Doctor in her stronghold, the Rani seizes upon his vulnerable state. By impersonating his friend Mel, the Rani deceives the unwitting Doctor into helping her achieve her audacious plan. Just what is she up to? Why has she enslaved Albert Einstein and a host of geniuses? And as an asteroid composed of Strange Matter approaches Lakertya, can a weakened Doctor save the universe when he has little idea of who he really is? BackgroundIn the novelisation of their story, Pip and Jane Baker explain it is the TARDIS 'tumultuous buffeting' that triggers the Doctor's regeneration. This colourful phrase is also an apt description of what was occurring behind the scenes at the time. Time and the Rani marks a period of transition both for our favourite Time Lord and for the format of the programme itself. In the mid 80s BBC Senior Executives were continuing to monitor the programme closely. Even after a period of 'rest', there was a sense that Doctor Who needed some dramatic changes, starting with the show's lead actor. Although there were serious implications off-screen, the programme initially re-brands itself with a lighter storytelling style by blending fairytale motifs with soap opera flounces. There is much to be enjoyed in Time and the Rani, with an arch villainess adopting a disguise to trick a vulnerable foe; an innocent heroine convincing a strange and initially hostile creature to help her; and a native population banding together to overthrow a tyrant. The lead actors clearly enjoy their roles in the story, particularly Kate O'Mara who lampoons the character of Mel with great enthusiasm. Sylvestor McCoy plays the fool with relish at first, but gives small hints of a 'darker', more manipulative side that his character will develop over the years. Time and the Rani marks the gateway to a new era for Doctor Who, with storylines becoming more surreal, dangers even more unexpected, twists and turns more tumultuous. But, as always in Doctor Who, there's a great sense of fun about the whole thing. | ||

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
