StarringPeter Davison (Fifth Doctor) Mark Strickson (Vislor Turlough) Nicola Bryant (Peri Brown) Gerald Flood (Kamelion) Anthony Ainley - The Master Dallas Adams - Howard Michael Bangerter - Curt Peter Wyngarde - Timanov Barbara Shelley - Sorasta James Bate - Amyand Jonathan Caplan - Roskal Edward Highmore - Malkon Max Arthur - Zuko John Alkin - Lomand Simon Sutton - Lookout Written byRobert Holmes Produced byJohn Nathan-Turner Directed byGraeme Harper SynopsisA strange signal from Earth draws the TARDIS to the islands of Lanzarote, where Turlough rescues a young American girl, Peri, from drowning. Among her possessions is an artefact bearing an alien symbol - the same triangular mark that Turlough has branded into his arm. The mystery deepens when Kamulion falls under the control of a powerful mind, and the TARDIS travels to the volcanic world of Sarn. As Turlough is forced to face his past, the Doctor must stop his oldest enemy from harnessing the revitalising powers of Numismaton gas ... BackgroundBy 1984, Doctor Who was at last coming to terms with the midweek slot it occupied in the BBC schedules. This is Doctor Who with no embarrassing rubber-suited monster, very little screaming, and no easy answers. Planet of Fire presents a very grown-up world, where teenage girls run off with strange men to Morocco (or Androzani Minor] with more on their mind than just collecting plant specimens. Not only does Turlough take off his trousers and throw away his old school tie forever, but new companion Peri makes her debut in a now-infamous bikini scene. Following Resurrection of the Daleks, the Fifth Doctor is a changed man. With Tegan gone, he finds himself burdened with an unreliable robot and the fickle young man. Hardening his hearts, the Doctor now makes it very clear he will not tolerate further treachery from his companions. Despite an ambitious genesis, poor Kamelion ultimately proves to be little more than the Master's plaything, whose exit comes as something of a relief. By contrast, the dilemma facing Turlough holds some fascinating parallels with the Doctor's own choices in The War Games [1969], making his departure all the more poignant. The depth of their unlikely friendship is palpable as Turlough passes the responsibility of looking after the Doctor to Peri. A new Fifth Doctor emerges from the flames of Sarn. He is re-invigorated by Peri's enthusiasm for adventure, and her interest in him boldly challenges the safely neutered friendships of the past: Peri is the first female companion permitted to desire the Doctor, but she will certainly not be the last ... | ||

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
