Synopsis

Still under the malign influence of the Black Guardian, Turlough sabotages the TARDIS, placing the Doctor and his companions in grave danger. Nyssa disappears through an unstable interface with a nearby space liner, and the Doctor begins a desperate search for her aboard the ship.

When the liner docks at Terminus, a space station at the exact centre of the universe, the horrific truth starts to emerge. It may already be too late to save Nyssa's life, and the existence of the entire cosmos is now in peril ...

Background

Like Warrior's Gate before it, Steve Gallagher's Terminus brings a welcome dose of hard science fiction to Doctor Who, presenting a bleak future in which faceless and greedy corporation trades in human lives and its workers are little better than slaves to their own drug dependencies. Add in a time-bending paradox theory about the creation of the universe and you have the potential for one of the darkest adventures in the series. Sadly, all that promise is somewhat eclipsed when Nyssa, for no very goods reason, starts taking off her clothes ...

The presence of the Black Guardian in this middle story of the eponymous trilogy is fleeting, serving simply to perpetuate Turlough's anguish as he wrestles with his conscience. The notion that a companion could be consciously deceitful was fascinating new territory for Doctor Who, and Turlough's act of sabotage early in this story powerfully demonstrates the depths of his disloyalty. Subsequently, he and Tegan are forced into an awkward and unhappy alliance where they must work together to survive. This claustrophobic experience is edgy and unsettling, particularly when Turlough solicits Tegan's perspective on killing.

This was a troubled production, with script changes, and problems with costumes, budget and studio time all combining to complicate the process. All the more impressive, then, that Terminus delivers a genuinely emotional and touching farewell for Nyssa of Traken.

In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
