Synopsis

The Doctor's past incarnations are being snatched out of time and space and transported to the Death Zone on Gallifrey, where they are reunited with some old friends and pitted against their deadliest enemies in the Game of Rassilon. Someone is manipulating the Doctor and his companions in order to claim thew most ancient and powerful secret of the Time Lords ... but can they survive the challenges and uncover the traitor before it is too late?

Background

Given the precedent set by The Three Doctors in 1973, a story reuniting the Doctor's previous incarnations to mark the 20th anniversary of the series was inevitable. However, the logistics were to prove challenging in the extreme, resulting in the brave casting of Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor, and the cunning use of previously unseen footage of the Fourth Doctor from the incomplete Shada (1979) to cover Tom Baker's absence. Thankfully, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee slip back into their respective roles with enchanting ease, whilst Peter Davison's Doctor is allowed to remain at the centre of the action and uncover the true villain of the piece.

The Five Doctors is a landmark episode of Doctor Who, but also as the first feature-length episode to be made. Screened as the centrepiece of 1983's Children in Need charity broadcast, it foreshadowed the notion of Doctor Who as the 'event television' it has become in recent years, as a time when the series itself was still relegated to a week-night slot in the schedules.

Season 20 had wallowed shamelessly in the show's history, and The Five Doctors brazenly set out trump that. It is a melting pot of Doctors, companions and enemies from the past, all jumbled together in a glorious confection, laced with a liberal dose of Gallifreyan legend, and sprinkled with continuity references to delight and exasperate fans in equal measure.

It's the raucous birthday party that the show deserved.
