When the TARDIS is forced to make an unplanned visit to Sea Base Four, the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough find themselves accused of being enemy agents. Quickly embroiled in a deadly game of paranoid intrigue, it becomes clear that others on the base have sabotage and murder in mind. However, there is a greater threat to Mankind: the Silurians and Sea Devils, prehistoric reptiles seeking to reclaim the Earth. Can the Doctor prevent them implementing their'final solution' and triggering a war that could wipe out the entire human race? BackgroundTapping into a global paranoia of the nuclear threat, Warriors of the Deep depicts a world where two superpowers are poised on a knife-edge of mutual destruction. It was s chillingly familiar Cold War scenario for the viewer in the early 1980s, and showcased the return of the Silurans and the Sea Devils, not seen in Doctor Who for more than a decade. The setting of the story is very traditional: an isolated base, with an international crew reminiscent of The Moonbase or The Ice Warriors. Neatly skirting the issue of who the 'enemy' is, it quickly becomes clear that the endless capacity humans have for deceit, hatred and greed will make their eventual fate inevitable. Enter the once-noble race of reptiles seeking to reclaim their home, and the Doctor is once again cast in the role of increasingly-desperate peacemaker. The ambiguously morality at the core of the 'Earth Reptiles' trilogy is somewhat undermined by the one-dimensional aggression of the Silurians here, although since the humans are presented as equally antagonistic, there is little reason to side with them against the 'invaders'. Compromised by a series of cost-cutting edits, a reduced production schedule and some poorly-realised design choices, Warriors of the Deep struggles to deliver the dramatic impact it has on paper. Sadly, this is epitomised by the unintentionally absurd appearance of the Myrka, which, despite only appearing briefly on screen, contrives to disproportionately impinge upon an otherwise thought-provoking tale. There really should have been another way ... | ||

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
