StarringColin Baker (Sixth Doctor) Bonnie Langford (Mel Bush) Lynda Bellingham - The Inquisitor Michael Jayston - The Valeyard Anthony Ainley - The Master Tony Selby - Sabalom Glitz Geoffrey Hughes - Popplewick James Bree - Keeper of the Matrix Written byRobert Holmes, Pip and Jane Baker Produced byJohn Nathan-Turner Directed byChris Clough SynopsisThe Doctor is on trial for his life. Plucked out of time and space by the Time Lords, he is charged with transgressing the First Law of Time. He must defend himself against the prosecution led by the sinister Valeyard ... The Doctor has tried to prove his innocence, but the Valeyard is certain of the his guilt and will stop at nothing to carry out a sentence of death. But there is a surprise witness waiting in the wings, one who knows the truth ... With the trial in disarray, the Doctor flees into the Matrix to confront his enemy, into a nightmarish world of torture and punishment. Trapped within, he will have to fight for his life against the ultimate foe ... BackgroundLuminary Doctor Who writer, Robert Holmes, who had contributed such classic stories as The Ark in Space and The Caves of Androzani was asked to write the final concluding two-parter of The Trial of a Timer Lord, the working title of which was Time Incorporated. Tragically, he died after delivering only a first draft of Part Thirteen and an outline of Fourteen. Script Editor Eric Saward took on the task of completing the final episode and re-writing Holmes's script to match. Unfortunately, he and producer John Nathan-Turner disagreed regarding the inconclusive cliffhanger ending Saward wrote - which had the Valeyard and the Doctor seemingly plunging to their deaths in a void. John Nathan-Turner thought it too downbeat and believed, after the hiatus, that the show should end on a high note that it was back in business. Saward resigned and, at the eleventh hour, withdrew permission for his script to be used. With production crew and cast assembled, Nathan-Turner hurriedly commissioned Pip and Jane Baker to write a replacement final episode. Alas, The Trial of a Time Lord did turn out to be a literal trial and, on the evidence of poor ratings for the season, the BBC unceremoniously sacked Colin Baker from the title role. His last line as the Doctor on screen was the less than heroic, 'Carrot juice, carrot juice!' Happily his Doctor has undergone a resurgence in the Big Finish audios, where his sixth regeneration has become one of the most successful - compassionate, moral and still just a little bit fiery. | ||

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
