Synopsis

The Doctor takes Ace back to her home town of Perivale, only to find that something is very, very wrong. Many of Ace's old friends and neighbours have disappeared, whilst domestic pets become victims of unseen killers. Will the hunter become the hunted when only the fittest survive ... ?

Background

At the time it seemed impossible. But in hindsight, it's hard to see how Doctor Who could have survived in the rapidly-changing world of the BBC during the 1990s. Arguably it would have soon flounded in the days of 'Producer Choice' and independant programme making that the new decade had ushed in.

Doctor Who had escaped cancellation in 1985, but the programme had taken a mortal blow to its reputation. Its annual re-commission was no longer a foregone conclusion, not having to earn its keep year on year.

Shielded from the internal politics of the corporation, script editor Andrew Cartnel had been desperately trying to invigorate the series he had inherited. His ideas and vision for Doctor Who would be a completely new direction for the programme. With only four stories and fourteen episodes a year to play with, the implementation was always going to slow.

With Survival, the series had finally reached the point that Cartmel had been aiming for. How cruel that this was to be the last story of the least season of classic Doctor Who. Yet all the ingreedients for the progrmme's future are contained here - a young feisty companion from the dingier side of London's council estates, a surburban setting, a modern-day Earth-based adventure, and a Doctor far-removed from the Gallifrayen origins.

Although Survival is an ending, with Rose Tyler still strong in our minds, it also has the distant schoes of an exciting new beginning.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.

The items shown here are from the "main" BBC Records and Tapes library covering a wide secletion of genres from themes, comedy dramas and others, depending on which format you have selected.
