Synopsis

London, 1983: an old house mysteriously burns to the ground. On hundred years earlier, the Doctor and Ace arrive at a sinister mansion in the rural hamlet of Perivale. Horrors old and new await the Doctor amongst the peculiar residents of Gabriel Chase ... but it is Ace who must confront her own worst nightmares when she discovers that her past and the house's future are inextricably linked ...

Background

Ghost Light has the dubious distinction of being the last Doctor Who story made by the BBC during the programme's original run, bringing an end to production after 26 continuous years. Made as a studio-bound period piece, Ghost Light ably demonstrates the versatility of the series, as writer Marc Platt and script editor Andrew Cartmel experiment with a non-linear type of storytelling which doesn't offer much in the way of explanation or exposition. An all-star cast coupled with the BBC's finely-honed talent for costume drama gives a solid backdrop to the story. If nothing else, Ghost Light offers an intriguing snapshot of the direction Doctor Who might have taken had the series not been cancelled in 1989 ...

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
