Synopsis

Exiled to Earth in the late 20th century by his own people - the Time Lords - the newly regenerated Doctor arrives in Oxley Woods alongside a shower of mysterious meteorites. Investigating these unusual occurrences is the newly-formed United Nations Intelligence Taskforce - UNIT for short. Lead by Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, UNIT are soon called into action when people and meteorites start going missing. most puzzling of all is the attempted kidnap of a strange hospital patient - a man with two hearts, who insists that he recognises the Brigadier ...

The new Doctor soon joins forces with his old friend, UNIT, and the recently recruited Dr Liz Shaw, but time is running out ...

Irregular things are happening at a nearby plastics factory, while faceless creatures lurk in the woods. The Nestenes have arrives, and want to conquer the Earth ...

Background

'Spearhead from Space' launched 'Doctor Who' into the 1970s, complete with a new Doctor (in the shape of Jon Pertwee) and, for the first time, colour! Industrial problems at the BBC saw this initial story forced out of the confines of the television studio, and necessitated its recording on location and on film, giving it a unique 'feel' that would not be repeated again in the series' history. The idea of making the Doctor earthbound had been mooted - for budgetary reasons - by the production team for quite some time, and this story sets the scene for most of the next fives years of the show. Although the Third Doctor would slowly start venturing away from Earth, he would always return to the cosy familiarity of UNIT. The Autons would return in the following year's story 'Terror of the Autons' (1971), which also saw the introduction of one of the series' most popular villains - the Master.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.

The items shown here are from the "main" BBC Records and Tapes library covering a wide secletion of genres from themes, comedy dramas and others, depending on which format you have selected.
